A series of intimate talks hosted by one of Esin’s Creative Leaders, Toru Yoshikawa, who, each month, welcomes a world-class creative practitioner to discuss their personal philosophies and creative processes, to share what motivates and inspires them and to give their insights on the creative economy.

D&AD Japan Representative

Kotoko was born in Kanagawa, Japan, and grew up in the UK. She graduated with a BA Hons in Environment and Information Studies at Keio University. After working at a number of leading creative companies including design management office Transform co ltd, advertising agency Publicis Japan, and font creator Morisawa inc, Kotoko became a freelancer.

Today, she manages and represents designers and design businesses both in Japan and overseas. This includes Neville Brody, the UK graphic designer, and D&AD, the UK non-profit known for its international design/advertising awards.

Guest Creator: Norio Nakamura

Graphic designer

Born in Kawasaki. Upon graduating from Nihon University College of Art, Norio started work at Sony Music Entertainment. From there he went on to open his own studio, Norio Nakamura Production Office.

Notable work includes “Measuring: This much, That much, How much?”, an art exhibition at 21_21 DESIGN SIGHT, Playstation game “I.Q.” and “Teto Pettenson”, a song for NHK TV. Norio’s publications include “The professor and his strange swimming pool” and “Dottoko Zoo”, (both published by Fukuinkan Shoten) as well as “Radical Advertising” (co-written by Nario and Masahiko Sato, published by Magazine House). Norio has won numerous awards including an NY ADC Silver Award, Japan Media Arts Award Excellence Prize, Tokyo ADC Award, Tokyo TDC Award, and BolognaRagazzi Award.

Guest Creator: Naomi Hirabayashi

Art director / Graphic designer

Born in Tokyo. After graduating from Kuude (Department of Scenography, Space and Fashion Design) at Musashino Art University, Naomi started her career at Shiseido (Advertising department). From 2002, she was assigned to work for a year at Made Thought, the London-based design studio. Naomi left Shiseido in December 2004 and started her new career as a freelancer from January 2005. Since then she has completed identity, print, and packaging work for a wide range of clients including (Marunouchi) HOUSE, la kagu, Y. & SONS, UNITED ARROWS, AND THE FRIET (art direction), HOPE, and NTT DOCOMO (packaging). She has also designed CD jackets for Akiko Yano, Hikaru Utada, and DREAMS COME TRUE. Her work has received a wealth of creative awards including; NY ADC (Gold, Silver), British D&AD (Silver), JAGDA (new face award), Tokyo ADC, Tokyo TDC, Good Design and many more.

Guest Creator: Seiichi Hishikawa

Filmmaker / Writer / Art Director / Photographer

Born in 1969 in Tokyo, Seiichi started his career at CBS/Sony group in the music industry. He moved to NY in 1991 and made a transition to the film industry. He worked as an editing engineer as well as a cinematographer in various kinds of productions such as TV, music video, experimental film, and movies. He came back to Japan and began working as a freelance film director and set director, and in 1997 together with Mr. Nagaoka, founded the design studio, Drawing and Manual Ltd., taking a remarkable role in the motion graphics movement in Japan. He became a professor at the Department of Design at Musashino Art University in 2009, awarded in three different categories at Cannes Lions 2011 with NTT docomo CM “Xylophone” as a director. The same year, his first solo photo exhibition “Found stories from a movie that doesn’t exist” travelled from Kyoto to Tokyo and Kanazawa. Recently, he has been writing scripts, song writing and columns.
